
It is the question we are asked more than any other by riders who are keen on the idea of a tour but quietly unsure they can finish one. Would an e-bike make this possible? And if it would, does choosing one mean you are not really doing the ride?
The short answer is that an e-bike solves a real problem for some riders and solves nothing at all for others, and the difference has less to do with fitness than most people expect. Here is how we would think it through, including the part most comparisons leave out: on a supported tour there is a third option that costs nothing and that plenty of riders use without ever mentioning it.
First, What Actually Makes a Multi-Day Tour Hard
Riders tend to judge a tour by its single hardest day. That is the wrong measure. What makes a multi-day tour demanding is not the peak effort — it is the repetition. You are asked to get back on the bike the next morning, and the morning after that, for a week or two, with legs that have not fully recovered.
Our tours are graded on that basis. An easy tour asks for 20 to 50 km (15 to 35 miles) a day on mostly flat or gently rolling terrain. A moderate one asks you to be comfortable with 60 to 85 km (40 to 60 miles) on rolling to moderately hilly ground. A demanding tour means 80 to 110 km a day over moderately hilly to hilly terrain, with several climbs on the route and long descents that need confident braking.
Read those ranges again with the word "consecutive" in front of them. A rider who can just about manage the top of a range on a good day, once, is going to find the second week harder than the first. A rider who can ride the bottom of a range comfortably and repeat it is well inside the tour. That is the gap an e-bike is being asked to close.
Where an E-Bike Genuinely Changes the Day
Pedal assistance flattens the parts of a ride that break rhythm. Climbs are the obvious one, but the bigger effect is usually the accumulation: the fourth short rise of the afternoon, the drag into a headwind along a river, the last few kilometers into town when the group has thinned out and you are riding alone. An e-bike takes the sting out of all of those, and the rider arrives with something left.
It also changes the arithmetic for mixed pairs and groups. If one of you rides considerably stronger than the other, the usual outcome is that the stronger rider waits at the top of every hill and the other rides the whole tour slightly beyond comfort. Assistance closes that gap more cleanly than either of you adjusting your effort, and it tends to make the riding sociable rather than logistical.
- You have a specific limitation — a knee, a heart condition, a recent surgery — and a doctor has told you to keep effort moderate.
- You are riding with a partner whose pace is meaningfully different from yours and you want to ride together rather than meet at lunch.
- You want a demanding route for its scenery and its towns, not for its climbing.
- You are returning to riding after a long gap and would rather enjoy the first tour than survive it.
Where It Changes Less Than People Expect
An e-bike does not make you comfortable on a bike. Saddle soreness, hands going numb, a stiff neck on day six — these come from position and hours, not from effort, and assistance does nothing about them. If you have never ridden four days in a row, that is the discomfort to prepare for, and it is prepared for by riding, not by buying.
It also does not make descending easier. A demanding tour asks you to handle long and sometimes steep descents and to use your brakes properly, and an e-bike is heavier than the bike beside it, which means it carries more speed and asks more of the brakes, not less. If descending is what worries you, an e-bike is the wrong answer to the right question — practice is the answer, and it is worth doing before you travel.
And it does not remove the need to think about pace. Assistance runs out. Which brings us to the part that decides most of these arguments.
The Three Costs People Forget
Range, and the fact that it is not a number
Manufacturer range figures assume a moderate rider on moderate terrain in moderate weather. A loaded bike, a hilly day, cold air and a heavy hand on the assistance will all shorten it, sometimes dramatically. On a tour the relevant question is not "how far does it go" but "how far does it go on the hardest day of this itinerary, in the weather I might get" — and the answer often means riding in a lower assistance mode than you would like in order to be sure of arriving.
Charging, which is a hotel problem
Every night has to include a charge, which means the battery has to come off the bike and go up to the room, or the bike has to be somewhere with a socket. Our hotels are chosen partly for having somewhere secure and dry to put a group's bicycles overnight, but a locked garage is not always a garage with power. If you are bringing or hiring an e-bike, this is worth raising with us before the tour rather than discovering it on the first evening.
Weight, which is a transfer problem
An e-bike is substantially heavier than the bikes around it. That matters when a bike goes onto a van rack, onto a ferry, up a flight of station steps, or into a bike bag for the flight home. It is a manageable cost and not a hidden one, but it is real, and it is the cost riders most often forget to include.
What We Rent, and What We Do Not
We should be direct about this: we do not rent e-bikes. Our rental fleet is four fully serviced Fuji road and fitness models — the Absolute with flat handlebars, and the Newest, Roubaix and Sportif with drop handlebars. Renting one costs between $200 and $270 depending on the tour.
Every rental comes with a rear luggage rack and bungee cord, a spare tube and tire levers, a water bottle cage, a pump, a lock and an odometer. A helmet is not included, so bring your own.
If you want to ride with assistance, that means either bringing your own e-bike or arranging local hire, and availability varies from route to route. Ask us early rather than late. We would far rather tell you honestly what is possible on a given tour than have you arrive expecting something we cannot provide.
Getting Either Bike Across a Border
This is less of an obstacle than it sounds. Ferries and the Eurotunnel shuttle both carry essentially any type of bicycle, e-bikes included, and our routes are built around those crossings rather than in spite of them. Around 95% of our riding is on paved roads, which is why the fleet is road and fitness bikes rather than anything knobbly — and it is also why a standard e-bike is perfectly suited to the surface, if you bring one.
Airlines are the more variable part, and the rules around battery carriage in particular change. Check with your carrier well before you book flights, not after.
Flat Bars or Drop Bars — a Smaller Question, Asked More Often
If you are renting from us, this is the actual decision in front of you. Flat handlebars, as on the Fuji Absolute, put you in a more upright position with the brake levers permanently under your fingers. Drop handlebars, as on the Newest, Roubaix and Sportif, give you more hand positions across a long day and a lower, more efficient position into wind.
Neither is harder. The right answer is nearly always whichever one resembles the bike you already ride at home. A tour is not the fortnight to teach your hands a new shape, and the rider who spends day one adjusting to unfamiliar bars spends day two with sore wrists.
The Option That Costs Nothing
Here is the part that is missing from most e-bike comparisons, because most e-bike comparisons are not written about supported tours.
Every one of our tours carries a SAG van. It moves the luggage between hotels, it carries water and snacks and stops with them along the route, it holds the tools and the spares — and it will pick you up. Each tour has a carefully determined degree of difficulty, but you can always take a shuttle in the van for part of a day, or for an entire day, if you simply do not feel like riding.
You do not have to arrange it in advance. You do not have to justify it. Some riders use the van once in two weeks and some use it most afternoons, and nobody keeps score. It means the honest answer to "can I finish this tour?" is usually yes, on a standard bike, because finishing does not require riding every kilometer of every stage.
For a lot of riders, that removes the reason to hire an e-bike at all. For others it does not — if what you want is to ride the whole route under your own steam and assistance is what makes that possible, an e-bike is a better answer than a van seat. Both are legitimate. The mistake is assuming the choice is between an e-bike and suffering.
So Which Should You Ride?
Ride a standard road or fitness bike if you can already ride the lower end of your tour's daily range and repeat it the next day, if your worry is stamina rather than a specific physical limitation, or if the logistics of charging and weight would irritate you more than the climbing would.
Ride an e-bike if a medical reason makes sustained effort unwise, if you are riding with someone whose pace is genuinely different from yours, or if you have chosen a route whose difficulty you want to visit rather than earn — and you are willing to plan the charging and carry the weight.
And if you are somewhere between the two, book the tour you actually want and use the van for the rest. That is what it is there for.
